Christmas Day sermon from Luke 2.
We light the Shepherds candle and celebration joy on the third week of Advent. We light the angels candle on the fourth Sunday in Advent and the theme is peace. “Peace on earth, goodwill toward men” was their proclamation.
When the shepherds received good news of great joy, their immediate response was to share that with others. The shepherds are the pattern for what we need to do.
You can have peace in a world that does not know peace. We can live in God’s peace on the earth now and in the coming Kingdom. The shepherds in Luke 2 exemplify hearing and responding to the Gospel.
We have two letters written by Peter in the New Testament. They are both short but packed with good stuff. This introduction alone will almost make a Baptist shout.

We light the pink candle, the only brightly colored candle on the advent wreath, and celebrate the message of joy the angles brought to shepherds in the field. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
We light the Bethlehem candle to honor the faith of Mary and Joseph. They made the difficult journey to Bethlehem perhaps not understanding but walking in faith.
